12th Night Revel Benefit
The first annual St. David's Welsh Society winter benefit brought the 12th Night Revel to Lincoln. Join the frivolity on Sunday, January 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church at 8800 Holdrege.
This 12th Night is actually the sixth production for Kathy Disney and Lori McAlister. A celebration in observance of Epiphany, Three Kings Day or the eve of the 12th Day of Christmas, the 12th Night Revel began in Wymore as a benefit for the Great Plains Welsh
Heritage Centre. For three years, it was staged as a benefit for Mother to Mother Ministry in Beatrice. With McAlister's move to Lincoln last winter, the 12th Night has migrated north.
"12th Night is back where it began, in a Welsh setting highlighting
those unique mid-winter traditions," said McAlister. "St. David's Welsh Society will be marking a centennial in 2010 and we wanted to establish a presence in the
wider community in the run up to that celebration. We are also very pleased about this collaboration with St. David's Episcopal Church. I's a natural fit as the groups share this historical holiday and
their patron saint."
Anyone who has attended 12th Night will recognize this year's line-up as a mix of "the best of 12th Nights past" with some wonderful new additions.
Paddywhack makes an appearance with many holiday favorites including a carol they first performed in "An Irish Wren Boy Holiday" in 2006. Dr. Ben
Carlisle, Music Maestro at St. David's, will play organ and harpsichord. Nina
Burgess Vejnovich, Wales ex-pat living in Lincoln, will share her favorite family traditions along with young son, Samuel. Father and son team, Greg and Malcolm Weinert will
entertain as well as educate the audience about the Mari Lwyd and Hunting the Wren. No Welsh program would be complete without poetry and singing. As in previous 12th Nights, there will be several opportunities for the audience to join in.
Cast members Chris Sayre, Nina Vejnovich and Lori McAlister will be guests of William Stibor on
the first "Friday Live" of 2009, which airs on Nebraska Public Radio 91.1 FM at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9.
Refreshments are served following the program including Welsh Tea Cakes, Bara Brith and Barry's
Irish Tea. Admission is free. A donation will be taken to benefit St. David's Welsh Society of Nebraska.
