She was born on a farm in Kansas.  Her father was Station Agent for the railroad at Armour Nebraska near Liberty. Thatīs how Fred met her. Lula was 16 and Freddie was 17 when they were married in Pawnee City, Nebraska. making their home on a farm near Liberty, Nebraska where they raised  a family.

Fred & Lula Get Married

Freddie and Lula Thomas were wed at the Shannon Hotel in Pawnee City, Nebraska since they were building the new courthouse.

The newspaper account read:
They were married at 8:00am with Judge Barton performing the ceremony in quiet fashion. The bride's parents and sister attended as well as Groom's parents. The couple went to Gretna, KS. on Wednesday for their honeymoon

Gossip in the family indicates that Fred and Lula were very poor during the first part of their marrage. So poor infact that Fred's father (Frederick George Mathias) had to bring them food on a regular basis so they wouldn't starve!
