Bios 2008 Wine Writers and Song

Del Bowers grew up in Falls City, left to pursue a career as an executive with BF Goodrich, and then returned to his home town to retire. Love of his hometown motivated him to organize a “Come on Home” campaign to induce other retirees to move back to Falls City. Del will discuss two other Falls City natives who grew up together…John Falter, the artist and illustrator, and Pee Wee Erwin, jazz musician, who both achieved fame in their fields.

Amy Knox Brown, a fourth-generation Nebraskan and a third-generation Lincolnite, currently lives in Winston Salem NC where she teaches creative writing at Salem College. Her short fiction collection, Three Versions of the Truth, was recently published by Press 5. She is currently working on a novel set in Red Cloud NE.

Tony Church, Lincoln guitarist and composer, will play and discuss the 12-string guitar, an instrument he has been playing for nearly 30 years.

Edgar Clemens, retired UNL professor, performs his cowboy poetry across Nebraska. He weaves tales of cowboys on the trail, taking his audience back to the Old West Nebraska once knew.

Dell Darling, percussionist, has played in several Lincoln area bands, including Sour Mash and The Resonators.

Gene Davis, bass and vocals with Skylark, has shared the bill with Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans, and the Oak Ridge Boys. He is a member of the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Andrew Ek, Lincoln, is an English teacher and a member of the Lincoln Slam Poetry team. Some day he wants to figure out how to unicycle backwards.

Julie Felzien, Lincoln, is a piano soloist as well as an instructor and accompanist in Lincoln.

Stacy Fox, a student of interior design and English at UNL, is a poetry buff. She has done features and readings throughout the Midwest as well as in London, where she was a student.

Mara Giles, Auburn, is vice president of the Nebraska Writers Guild and is a two time winner of the T. E. McGinnis Memorial prize for writing in anthropology.

Beth Gillespie, Lincoln, is a published writer, poet, performer, and political activist as well as a member of the Lincoln Slam Poetry team.

Ross Hickerson has been performing poetry since 2005 and he, too, is a member of the Lincoln Slam Poetry Team

Art Homer, a poet and nonfiction writer, is a professor of creative writing at UNO. His awards include a Nebraska Arts Council Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Pushcart prize.

J. M. Huscher, Lincoln, does not believe that poetry is for the weak. He has presented high-energy performances and writing workshops in over 20 states. He works as a freelance editor while pursuing graduate work in education.

Wm. Kloefkorn, Lincoln, was named Nebraska’s state poet in 1982. A retired professor of English at Nebraska Wesleyan University, he is the author of many collections of poetry and other books. His book, Restoring the Burnt Child, is the One Book One Nebraska selection for 2008.

Sharon Kreimer has been singing with bands since high school. In her other life she is a teacher in the Lincoln public schools.

Nancy McCleery, Lincoln, is a poet and librettist. The author of numerous books, she is listed in the directory of American Poets and Fiction Writers. She is the recipient of Literary Fellowship Awards from the Alaska Arts Council and the Nebraska Arts Council.

Jan McMullen, Stella, is a retired teacher of English, past president of the Nebraska State Historical Society, and current board member of the Nebraska Center for the book.

Char Neely, Lincoln, writes whenever and however she can....in her car, a favorite chair, on a napkin or on a deposit slip. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications.

Amy Pletner is a fourth generation Nebraskan who does not have e-mail, internet, satellite television, or a cell phone. What she does have is a talent for writing and photography. Her poetry has appeared in several anthologies and magazines.

Jerry Renaud is head of the broadcasting sequence at UNL. He has played country, rock, blues and jazz around the Midwest for 25 years.

Dorothy Rieke, Julian, a retired teacher, has an active second career as a free-lance writer, lecturer and story-teller.

Amy Sadle, Syracuse, is a well-known artist. Her woodcuts and water colors are currently on exhibit at the Brownville Lyceum.

Marge Saiser is a poet living in Lincoln. Her work has been published in several literary journals and her poems have been finalists for the Robert Penn Warren Prize, the New Letters literacy award, and she has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She is the author of several published books as well as the editor of several more.

John “Doc” Walker, Lincoln musician, is returning to Brownville after many years. Bill Kloefkorn, with whom he will be performing in Brownville, says “his lyrics are poetry delivered on the wings of music.” Lincoln poet Twyla Hansen says “The music of John Walker flows like water, fills the well, feeds the spirit…”

Rex Walton, Lincoln, a published poet, is the “glue” that holds Lincoln writers together through his weekly internet communication. He has been writing poetry for nearly 20 years.

Alison Wilson, published poet and fine press operator, is a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska MFA in creative writing. She and her husband, Art Homer, live at Dog Rose Farm where they grow grapes and have built their own house.

Jan Chism Wright, a retired Houston investment banker, lives with her husband and daughter in Nebraska’s Barada hills where she gets her poetical inspiration.
